Alans black and white images are all taken using analogue cameras and this creates something really special; it gives them a certain je ne sais quoi that is missing from many of today’s digital images. Alan is a veteran of street photography. His experience in this area is reflected in his photos, as is his ability to use the short time frame to fully capture the photographic moment. His photos tell stories, sometimes of irony and desire, while at the same time expressing joy and tranquility, like life itself.

“I`m an amateur, and that’s the way I’d prefer to keep it. Street photography is very much a labour of love; it’s what I do at weekends to relax. I photograph the things that interest me or that I’ve connected with in some way. Photography for me is both recreation and meditation.” “Very simply my photographs describe the world I see around me. I’m happy to be published but if turning professional meant following a clients brief then I doubt whether my heart would be in it.”

There are many photographers I admire, known and not so well known, street and non-street, and I often look at their work and think to myself, “that’s how I’d like to take photographs”, small, perfect little packages of meaning and thought. But then when I’m walking down the street the reality kicks in and I realise that I am what I am, a ‘straight photographer’, simply recording what unfolds before me.”
