Could you please tell us something about yourself?
Würdest Du uns bitte etwas über Dich verraten?
I was born in 1965 in a small town in southern Bavaria close to Munich. I studied biology in Munich and worked there as a basic researcher in cell biology for many years. Then, while still in Munich, I switched briefly to a big microscope company as a microscopy specialist in customer support. Seven years ago I went back to basic research at the university, now in Potsdam where I got a permanent position and where live now. To me photography offers the heavily needed creative balance to my 50-hours job as a university teacher and scientist.

Can you briefly tell us about your photographic background? When did you start taking photographs, how did you start?
Kannst du uns kurz etwas über deinen fotografischen Wertegang sagen? Seit wann fotografierst Du, wie hast Du angefangen?
I started at the age of eight, when I got a very simple PAK-film camera as a present from my father, who also did photography as his hobby. Yet, before I was about fifteen I was not really aware of the various aspects of image composition. Shortly after that I bought my first SLR with my first self-earned money. With this step I read and learnt a bit more about photography beyond the simple control of technical issues.

What photographic style do you prefer? Would you like to specialize in a specific area, such as street photography or portrait / landscape photography?
I have tried myself in most photographic areas, but I enjoy most landscape and architecture photography in a broader sense and creative staged scenes. I’m often captivated by oddities or bizarre, quirky things and try to integrate them in my photos. Independent of the photographic area, I’m trying to find my own style and not to copy photographic idols. Yet, although I’m aware that one gets more recognition among professionals and galleries, if one specializes in a certain discipline, I want to keep my versatility.

Can you tell us how your work flows from the moment you get the idea to the stage of final presentation?
My work is a mixture of spontaneous photography on the spot and shootings planned in advance. Often I just go outside into the city, often Berlin, which is very close by, or on a car ride through the countryside of Brandenburg and stop, if I see something inspiring. Sometimes I shoot only documentary photos on these occasions to memorize locations that are interesting for planned shootings for one of my series or that require a different weather or season to yield a good result. I’m always trying to find the best viewpoint to get the best perspective and composition I can realize under the actual circumstances. Although using digital equipment most of the time, I still shoot as in analog times, i.e. I usually think before I press the button. I just don’t want to cull through numerous bad or mediocre pics afterwards at the computer until I find a presentable result. A good photo needs a good motive with carefully considered placement of the eyecatcher and an appealing overall composition. Usually I know already during the shooting where I want do some touch-up work afterwards and what color feeling I would like to create. Although I present most of my work in the internet I think the final presentation should be an exhibition of fine art prints (without a reflecting glass!). This is also why I always look for venues and occasions to exhibit. I like to keep the whole process from the shooting to the exhibition in my own hands, this is also why I usually print my photos myself and why I process both b&w and color analog material myself.

Could you possibly provide a tip to the amazing photograph style, how much the pictures are processed afterwards, and what else one should take into consideration?
I don’t feel like a street photographer, at least not in a sense of great photographers like Cartier-Bresson. I rarely capture spontaneous street scenes with people, since I don’t want to feel like a hunter for fair game. If I feel a motive needs the presence of humans and there are recognizable people on my photos it is often myself or somebody I know. In many cases I prefer the absence of humans in my city photography, since this creates an odd, unusual feeling. All my images are somehow processed. Usually I remove disturbing elements as long as they are small and I’m adjusting colors and saturation, often using overlays with b&w versions and cross filter. In case of analog material I sometimes do the cross process directly by developing slide films with C-41 chemicals.

In your opinion, what constitutes the art of producing extraordinary street photographs, and what are the characteristics of a good picture in this field?
As you can see from my answer to the previous question my feelings about street photography are somewhat ambivalent, thus I’m not really an expert to answer this question. Many street photos I see in photo communities and also in photo contests are in my opinion just trivial and shallow. One gets the impression that some people think that it is enough to take a snapshot in the street, render it black and white and to add some digital grain to create an artwork. Of course there are also real masters of street photography who manage to create spontaneous street photos with a clear and well-conceived composition. I think for a good photographer it is important to realize an interesting setting, to think about the final composition and then to wait for something interesting to happen through the people accidentally entering the scene.

What equipment do you use and what are your favorite focal lengths?
Welche Ausrüstung benutzt du und was sind Deine bevorzugten Brennweiten?
The importance of equipment is usually overestimated. You can make interesting and captivating photos with almost any camera. I have made a whole project with a Holga camera for less than 30 €. Among the analog cameras I use Pentacon Six and Kiev 88CM medium format cameras with Carl Zeiss Jena and Arsat lenses from 50 to 180 mm. However in most cases I work with a Canon 5D Mk II. Most of my images I shoot in the range between 16 and 50 mm, thus, the Canon 16-35 mm and 24-105 mm lenses are my favorites.

What characterizes your work in comparison to other street photographers / landscape photographers?
Was charakterisiert Deine Arbeiten im Vergleich zu anderen Street Fotografen / Landschaftsfotografen?
I don’t want to compare myself with others. Independent of the subject (i.e. the categories on my website) I try to shoot photos evoking emotions in the viewer that keep the photo in the viewer’s mind for a while. I always try to find a very clear composition with a clear eyecatcher and without disturbing elements. In the post processing process I try to find a means of image processing that supports the emotions I’d like to transport to the viewer. However, I never try to use image processing to create a mood or light impression that is totally different from the real one, i.e. to render a sunlight shot to a b&w night shot, since I don’t want to betray my viewers.

Were there interesting incidents in your photo shoots, whether funny, embarrassing or sad?
When my project partner Uta Schönknecht and me made the photo “Well Prepared” within the series “On The Way” http://www.graef-fotografie.de/unterwegs/rgf_5dii_09424colwzf.jpg.htm) we crossed a little tideway with our rubber boots to reach a little sand islet. I put my photo backpack in the sand and assisted Uta in her photos. We were quite absorbed and realized too late that the flood was coming, which happens very quickly at the North Sea. We hastily took our backpacks (mine was already in the water but fortunately still dry inside) to head back to the safe part of the beach. While crossing the tideway we had to realize that it meanwhile was already much deeper than our rubber boots high, and thus we waded through the hip-deep tideway still wearing our tidy clothes. It was easier for her, since she was wearing a rock, but my suit got totally soaked. People at the beach were quite amused about this strange couple in perfect clothing within the North Sea. Afterwards we just went on taking photos, since one cannot see the wetness of the clothes in the photos anyway.

What are the most important experiences you had during your photographic career?
This was when I won the Potsdam art prize on an art fair in 2011. It was a public voting among more than 1500 visitors of the fair. I was really overwhelmed as this was very unexpected, since I was one of only three photographers among the many other artists, who were all painters and carvers. I never received so much recognition and visitors with artistic sense in my exhibitions before.

What advice would you give to a newbie for his/her photographic career?
Critically view many photos and paintings and try to find out why you like certain pictures and why you dislike others. Personally ask other experienced photographers e.g. in a local photo club for their honest opinion and accept a damning review. You’ll never get an honest opinion in online communities. Be self-critical. In the beginning most people try to copy photos or a style they like. But try to express yourself and your own taste as soon as possible.

Were you inspired by other photographers, and if so, which ones?
I like to go to exhibitions of photos and paintings. I have many photo books at home and consume a lot of photos in the internet, so it’s hard to say where my inspiration comes from. Thus, my inspiration has many sources. I love the works of Gregory Crewdson, Andreas Gursky, Nadav Kander, Josef Hoflehner and Petr Lovigin.

Do you have a dream for photography that you would like to fulfill?
