Could you please tell us something about yourself?
Kan je iets over jezelf vertellen?
I was born in 1965 in Beringen, Belgium and since 1989 I am living in Aarschot. Since 1997 I have an administration job at the courthouse in Leuven.
Ik ben geboren in 1965 in Beringen, België, en sinds 1989 woon ik in Aarschot. Sinds 1997 heb ik een job als administratief medewerker bij de Rechtbank in Leuven.
Can you briefly tell us about your photographic background? When did you start taking photographs, how did you start?
Kan je kort iets vertellen over je fotografische achtergrond. Wanneer en hoe begon je met fotografie.
When I was 18 I bought a small compact camera and since then I’m fascinated by photography, but I only use my camera when I’m going on vacation.It was in 2004 when I bought a canon powershot G5 and it was my first more advanced step into digital photography. A year later I bought a canon EOS 350D and that was a real revelation. I learned myself how to use the technics of that camera during the following years just by practicing and looking at other photos.
Toen ik 18 was kocht ik mezelf een kleine compact camera en sindsdien ben ik gefascineerd door fotografie, maar ik gebruikte mijn camera alleen als ik op vakantie ging.In 2003 kocht ik mijn eerste digitale compact camera en in 2004 kocht ik mijn eerste geavanceerde digitale camera, een Canon Powershot G5. Een jaar later kocht ik een Canon Eos 350D en dit was een echte openbaring. Ik heb mezelf geleerd te werken met deze camera door veel te oefenen en veel te fotograferen.
What photographic style do you prefer? Would you like to specialize in a specific area, such as street photography or portrait / landscape photography?
Welke stijl van fotografie geniet je voorkeur? Wil je je specializeren in een bepaald thema zoals straatfotografie, portret of landschapsfotografie?
I prefer more the natural – romantic style. When I look at a photo that inspires me I must immediately got that “wow”-feeling, and I’m trying to do the same in my photography. I always try to use natural light and if possible I try to achieve a romantic atmosphere. My heart lays in landscape – nature photography, but I also like travel and architecture photography, and in some occasions portraits. For me the perfect time to take photos is in spring or in autumn (my favorite season) in the early morning when there is a little bit of mist and sunshine so the sunrays can break through the trees. Magic!
Ik hou meer van de natuurlijke en romantische stijl. Als ik een mooie foto zie die me aanspreekt moet ik onmiddellijk dat “wow”-gevoel hebben en ik probeer hetzelfde gevoel te leggen in mijn foto’s. Ik probeer altijd natuurlijk licht te gebruiken en ik probeer altijd een romantisch kantje aan mijn foto’s te geven. Hoewel ik ook hou van reis-, architectuur, en zelfs portretfotografie ligt mijn hart en passie toch in natuur- en landschapsfotografie. Het perfecte moment voor mij om foto’s te nemen is in de lente of in de herfst (mijn favoriete seizoen) ‘s morgens vroeg wanneer er een beetje mist is in combinatie met zon, zodat je de zonnestralen door de bomen ziet breken. Een magisch moment.
Can you tell us how your work flows from the moment you get the idea to the stage of final presentation?
Kan je vertellen hoe je je foto’s uitwerkt van het moment dat je een idee hebt tot aan het eindresultaat?
When I do my nature photography I don’t have any ideas, I just get the inspiration of the moment.
Als ik natuurfotografie doe heb ik niet echt een idee om van te beginnen, maar laat ik met inspireren door het moment zelf.
Could you possibly provide a tip to the amazing photograph style, how much the pictures are processed afterwards, and what else one should take into consideration? What’s your approach to adding creative effects in post-production, such as texture, lighting effects and toning?
Kan je misschien enkele tips geven over je stijl, hoeveel werk je achteraf besteed aan de afwerking van je foto’s en waar men rekening mee moet houden? Wat is jouw werkwijze om creatieve effecten zoals texturen, lichteffecten en toning toe te passen in de nabewerking?
When people ask me how I take those photos, I always answer: follow your instinct and listen to your heart. For me: what you see is what you get. Yes, technic is important, but don’t lose your head trying to get the perfect technical photo when you only have seconds to capture that shot. Make sure your camera is ready and follow your instinct. See the details and listen to mother nature
. When I process my photos afterwards I try to enhance the details and the colors, and for that I use Photoshop or PaintShop Pro in combination with Nik-software. Normally I try to achieve a natural effect, certainly for my nature photography, but sometimes I use a HDR or a vintage filter to achieve some more creative effects.
Wanneer men vraagt hoe ik fotografeer, zeg ik altijd: ga op je gevoel af en volg je hart.Voor mij geldt: “What you see is what you get”. En ja, techniek is belangrijk, maar als je in de natuur bent heb je soms maar een seconde om die foto te maken die je op dat moment wil maken, en dan moet je niet beginnen met al die technische details van je camera na te kijken. Zorg dat je camera van in het begin goed ingesteld is en ga op je gevoel af. Kijk naar de details en luister naar de natuur!Wanneer ik mijn foto’s bewerk achteraf probeer ik altijd de details, het licht en de kleuren te accentureren, en hiervoor gebruik ik Photoshop en Paintshop Pro,in combinatie met de filters van Nik-software. Normaal gezien probeer ik een zo natuurlijk mogelijk effect te bekomen, zeker voor natuurfotografie, maar soms gebruik ik ook wel andere technieken zoals HDR, of voeg ik een vintagefilter toe om wat meer creatieve resultaten te bekomen.
How extensive is your post-processing?
Hoe intensief in je nabewerking?
It depends. I always shoot Raw, so I always process my photos with minimal improvement to light, colour and sharpness. When I’m in a creative mood I can spend a lot of time on 1 photo to get the result I’m looking for.
Het hangt ervan af: ik fotografeer altijd in RAW, aldus gebruik ik altijd de standaardbewerking achteraf met aanpassing van licht, kleur en scherpte. Wanneer ik in een creatieve bui ben kan ik wel heel wat tijd in 1 foto steken om dat effect te bekomen dat me aanspreekt.
In your opinion, what constitutes the art of producing extraordinary photographs, and what are the characteristics of a good picture in your photographic field?
Naar jouw mening, waarin ligt de kunst om unieke foto’s te nemen en wat zijn de eigenschappen van een goede foto in jouw specialisatie?
For me an extraordinary photo must have a certain look that immediately makes me say “wow”, and when I look at it for the 5th time I still must have the same feeling. Sometimes it’s the object, in other times the composition or the color that makes me wonder. I’m a big fan of natural sunrays or long exposure photography. A good nature or landscape photograph must give me the feeling that I want to be in that place to sense the same experience as the author.
Voor mij moet een goede foto onmiddellijk dat “wow-gevoel geven, en wanneerik voor de 5de keer naar diezelfde foto kijk moet ik nog altijd dat gevoel hebben. Soms is het het onderwerp, soms ligt het aan de compositie of de kleuren die me dat gevoel geven, maar het gevoel moet er wel zijn.Ik ben een grote fan van zonnestralen en van lange sluitertijden. Een goede natuur- of landschapsfoto moet me het gevoel geven dat ik ook op die plaats wil zijn om hetzelfde gevoel te beleven als de auteur van die foto.
What equipment do you use and what are your favorite focal lengths?
Welke uitrusting gebruik je en wat is je favoriete focuslengte?
I use a canon EOS 70D and a canon EOS 550D and when I’m in the field I normally use my Canon 24-105 mm 4.0mm. When I make portraits I use my Sigma 70-200 mm 2.8. When on vacation I normally use a Sigma 18-250 mm.
Ik gebruik een Canon eos 70D en als back-up een Canon eos 550D en als ik in de natuur ben gebruik ik normaal gezien altijd mijn Canon 24-105 mm 4.0mm lens. Als ik ortretfotografie doe gebruik ik mijn Sigma 70-200 mm 2.8 lens. Als ik op vakantie ga gebruik ik enkel mijn Sigma 18-250 mm lens.
What characterizes your work in comparison to other photographers, especially in your photographic field/ area ?
Waarin onderscheidt jouw fotografie zich van andere fotografen, meer bepaald in jouw specialisatie?
I don’t like to compare myself to other photographers. I try to get my own style by creating a more romantic atmosphere and people who follow me recognize my style.
Ik hou er niet van mezelf te vergelijken met andere fotografen, omdat ik mijn eigen stijl probeer te volgen door een meer romantische stijl na te streven, en de mensen die me volgen herkennen onmiddellijk mijn stijl, wat me misschien wel onderscheidt van anderen.
Were there interesting incidents in your photo shoots, whether funny, embarrassing or sad?
Heb je interessante incidenten meegemaakt terwijl je foto’s maakte, iets grappig, beschamend of droevig?
I remember one time when I got up early in autumn to take some photos in the forest. I had my camera on a tripod to take some longexposure shots of the sunrays when a group of deers crossed the path in front of me. One of them stood still, we stared into each other’s eyes for a few seconds, but when I finally come to my senses and reached for my other camera it disappear in the forest. Those experiences make it worth to get up early.
Ik herinner me een ochtend in de herfst toen ik vroeg in een bos wandelde om wat foto’s te nemen. Ik had mijn camera klaar op mijn statief om wat foto’s met lange sluitertijd te nemen van de zonnestralen die door de mist priemden wanneer een groepje herten over het pad sprongen. Eentje bleef staan en keek me aan gedurende enkele seconden, maar toen ik bekomen was van de verbazing en mijn andere camera nam om een foto te nemen was hij/zij reeds verdwenen in het bos. Het is voor die momenten dat ik het doe.
What are the most important experiences you had during your photographic career?
Welke zijn de belangrijkste ervaringen die je meemaakte in je loopbaan als fotograaf?
Each time when I’m on my way to take some photos I experience the beauty of Mother Nature. How beautiful is a wonderful sunrise or sunset, the wonder of light, and everything else. When you stop wondering about the beauty of it all, I guess you stop dreaming.
Elke keer als ik op pad ben in de natuur ervaar ik iets belangrijk. Hoe wonderbaarlijk is een mooie zonsopgang of zonsondergang, het wonder van de lichtinval en al de rest. Wanneer zo een momenten je niet meer verbazen, dan kan je niet meer dromen.
What advice would you give to a newbie for his/her photographic career?
Welk advies wil je geven aan beginnende fotografen?
Follow your instinct and try to make photographs that you like instead of trying to copy another photographer. Try to find your own style, and don’t stare at all those “rules”, and believe in yourself.
Volg je gevoel en probeer je eigen foto’s te maken in plaats van anderen te immiteren. Probeer je eigen stijl te ontwikkelen en probeer ook eens van de “regeltjes” af te stappen. En zeer belangrijk: geloof in jezelf.
Were you inspired by other photographers, and if so, which ones?
Haalde je je inspiratie bij andere fotografen, en indien ja, wie?
I’m inspired by other photographers, but not anyone special. Each day I am surfing the web on those photographer sites like flickr, 1X or 500px to look at all those beautiful photos and they all give me inspiration
Ik ben geïnspireerd door vele andere fotografen, maar door niemand specifiek. Elke dag surf ik wel eens naar al die mooie fotografiesites, zoals Flickr, 1X of 500px, om naar al die mooie foto’s te kijken, en daar vind ik de inspiratie om zelf te fotograferen.
Do you have a dream for photography that you would like to fulfill?
Heb je nog bepaalde dromen in fotografie die je wil vervullen?
How great it would be to discover the world and take some photos, write some stories about it and got payed for it.
Hoe geweldig zou het niet zijn om de wereld te kunnen ontdekken, te fotograferen, er verhalen over te schrijven en er nog voor betaald worden ook.
