10 minutes with Joachim Bergauer – The Interview

After the article about his photographic work, Joachim was so kind as to grant us an interview. You can get a glimpse of his photographic work here.

Could you please tell us something about yourself?

Würdest Du uns bitte etwas über Dich verraten?

Agnostic and an incredible love of pictures. I also like to reflect upon environmental matters, and I like to travel in other countries in order to develop myself.

Agnostisch und eine unglaubliche Bildliebe. Ich reflektiere auch gerne was das Umfeld betrifft und ich Reise gerne in Länder um mich weiterzubilden.

Can you briefly tell us about your photographic background? When did you start taking photographs, how did you start?

Kannst du uns kurz etwas über deinen fotografischen Wertegang sagen? Seit wann fotografierst Du, wie hast Du angefangen?

Well, how can one express it best? I discovered pictures at the age of 12. My first model was the cat, and since all my cat pictures were a success in my environment, they were used to portray the most absurd things. However, it did not go so far that the cat would be able to sue me. I started working with film, and then I got an offer from Austria’s most popular tabloid to work as a sports photographer. After 2 years of sports photography, I switched to another newspaper that had a bit more culture in photography. Anyway, after these two years I went into theater photography and worked for bigger houses. The magazine photography was expanded, and I even managed to sell various portrait lines to the New York Times. I also got lucky and had some celebrities in my studio. Their photographs made me quite famous. Nevertheless, I do not exhibit them very often, because some of my other pictures mean more to me.

Tja, wie kann man das am besten formulieren. Ich entdeckte die Fotografie im Alter von 12 Jahren. Mein erstes Model war die Katze und da alle meine Katzenbilder in meiner Umgebung ein Erfolg waren musste sie für die absurdesten Sachen herhalten. Allerdings ging es nicht soweit das sie mich verklagen konnte. Ich ging zum Film und anschliessend bekam ich ein Angebot von Österreichs beliebtesten Boulvard als Sportfotograf zu arbeiten. Nach 2 Jahren Sportfotografie wechselte ich zu einer anderen Zeitung die etwas mehr Bildkultur besaß. Widerum nach diesen zwei Jahren ging ich in die Theatherfotografie und arbeitete für grössere Häuser. Die Magazinfotografie wurde ausgebaut und selbst für die New York Times konnte ich verschiedene Portraitlinien erstellen. Ich hatte auch Glück und bekam dadurch Prominente in mein Studio. Mittels diesen Bilder wurde ich bekannt. Allerdings präsentiere ich sie nicht so gerne weil mir andere Bilder mehr bedeuten.

Many of your pictures were taken on the African continent, and in areas that cannot readily be found in tour operators’ travel brochures. How did this happen?

Viele Deiner Bilder sind auf dem afrikanischen Kontinent entstanden, und das in Gebieten, welche nicht gerade in den Reiseprospekten von Veranstaltern zu finden sind. Wie kam es dazu?

I was recruited by an editor who was working for Leprosy Relief in Senegal. He had noticed my Namibia pictures and asked me for some photographs. I had paid for all these trips myself, but with these pictures I could make presentations, and also make them available to the editors. This would generate money for the benefit of the village. After that I was invited by a friend to travel to the north of India. Also I was able to selectively pursue my work there, taking pictures right on the spot – which were not meant for the media.

Ich wurde von einem Redakteur angeschrieben der für die Leprahilfe Senegal arbeitete. Er wurde durch meine Namibia Bilder aufmerksam und bat mich um fotografische Bilder. Diese Reisen trug ich alle selbst aber mit den Bildern konnte man Vorträge machen und sie ebenfalls den Redaktionen zur Verfügung stellen. Dadurch wurde Geld generiert die dem Dorf zugutekamen. Danach wurde fuhr ich auf Einladung eines Freundes in den Norden von Indien. Auch dort konnte ich gezielt meiner Arbeit nachgehen und mir direkt vor Ort – sprich abseits der Medien – ein Bild machen.

Can you tell us how your work flows from the moment you get the idea to the stage of final presentation?

Kannst Du uns etwas über Deinen Work Flow verraten, vom Augenblick der Idee bis hin zur abschließenden Präsentation?

The drive to my studio takes about 40 minutes every day. During this time I convert my picture ideas. Often it is very technical images that I have seen, and my first thought is – “I can also do that”. Finally, I’m trying to make new adaptations, and my concern is that I copy myself too often.

Die Fahrt zu meinem Studio dauert jeden Tag ca. 40 Minuten. In dieser Zeit setze ich meine Bildideen um. Manchmal sind es sehr technische Bilder die ich gesehen habe und der erste Gedanke ist – „Das kann ich auch“ . Letztendlich versuche ich neue Adaptionen zu machen und mein Anliegen ist das ich mich zu oft kopiere …

Could you possibly provide a tip to the amazing photograph style, how much the pictures are processed afterwards, and what else one should take into consideration?

Ist es möglich einen Tipp für den beeindruckenden fotografischen Style zu bekommen, wie viel Nachbearbeitung steckt in den Bildern, auf was sollte man achten?

The most important thing when shooting is the feeling, and also reflecting on it. I think that a photographer should very precisely identify the current trends ((whether political or trendy) and should bring it to the point visually.

Das wichtigste beim Fotografieren ist das Gefühl und das man auch reflektiert. Ich glaube das ein Fotograf sehr genau die Strömungen (ob politisch oder modisch) erkennen und es visuell auf den Punkt bringen sollte.

What equipment do you use and what are your favorite focal lengths?

Welche Ausrüstung benutzt du und was sind Deine bevorzugten Brennweiten?

My goodness! ….I give seminars and teach master’s classes in Austria. The essence is that one can and should create amazing photos with an older analog camera. The technology frenzy is no longer present and is no longer all that visible. My point is, it occurs to me again and again that a camera often is merely a status symbol, but what ultimately is created with it is important. For me, a camera should be a reliable tool, even if the image is edited. Earlier, we performed some tricks in the darkroom, and now we have more possibilities to change our pictures through Photoshop. As I’ve become a worldwide advertiser for Hasselblad 2005, I use this device to take photographs. For Fashion and Image Photography I use everything on the Canon pallette.

GRUNDGÜTIGER …. Ich gebe Seminare und unterrichte die Meisterklasse in Österreich. Der Kern ist das man mit einer älteren Analogen Kamera unglaublich Bilder machen kann und sollte. Der Technikwahnsinn ist schon zu präsent und für das Auge auch nicht mehr sichtbar. Worauf ich hinaus will ist. Es fällt mir immer wieder auf das manchmal eine Kamera ein Statussymbol ist aber letztendlich ist wicht was dabei herauskommt. Für mich sollte eine Kamera ein zuverlässiges Werkzeug sein. Auch mit der Bildbearbeitung. Früher trixten wir in der Dunkelkammer und heute haben wir mehr Möglichkeiten unsere Bilder umzusetzen mittels PS. Dadurch das ich weltweiter Werbeträger für Hasselblad 2005 geworden bin, fotografiere ich auch mit diesem Gerät. Bei Mode und Imagefotografie verwende ich die ganze Canon – Palette.

Were there interesting incidents in your photo shoots, whether funny, embarrassing or sad?

Gibt es interessante Zwischenfälle bei Deinen Fotoshootings, egal ob lustig, peinlich oder auch traurige?

Yes, if I work with models and people I grow fond of, and they die very early from injuries or illness, this affects me very deeply. I always find it funny when athletes come to my studio and I confuse them with make-up artists or other people. I do not give priority to celebrities.

Ja, wenn man mit Modellen und Menschen zusammenarbeitet die einem ans Herz wachsen und die sehr früh durch Krankheiten oder Unfälle sterben, dann berührt mich das sehr. Lustig finde ich es immer wieder wenn Sportler zu mir ins Studio kommen und ich sie als Visagisten oder was anderes verwechsle. Promis haben bei mir nicht den Stellenwert.

What are the most important experiences you had during your photographic career?

Was sind Deine wichtigsten Erfahrungen die Du im Laufe deiner fotografischen Laufbahn gemacht hast?

Persevering people. Remaining hopeful and not allowing things to get you down. If only a small group find your pictures acceptable and you cannot even make a living from your photographs, praise has little, if any, meaning.

Durchhalten Leute. Seiner Linie treu bleiben und sich nicht unterkriegen lassen. Wenn eine kleine Gruppe deine Bilder für gut befindet und du noch nicht von den Bildern leben kannst hat ein Lob nur eine kleine Bedeutung.

What advice would you give to a newbie for his/her photographic career, especially your photo trips to Africa?

Welchen Ratschlag würdest Du einem Neuling mit auf seinen fotografischen Weg geben, insbesondere bei Deinen Fotoreisen nach Afrika?

He should make a list. A checklist. What can you do today? When everything is done and you have finished your chores, grab your camera and play with it. It wants you to, it needs you to do that.

Er soll sich eine Liste machen. Eine Checkliste. Was kann ich heute tun. Wenn alles durch ist und keine Arbeit vorhanden dann packt die Kamera aus und spielt mit Ihr. Sie will es, sie braucht es.

Were you inspired by other photographers, and if so, which ones?

Haben Dich andere Fotografen inspiriert und wenn ja, welche?

In my early days, there were some photographers who inspired me. Jean Loup Sieff, for example. Newton as well. After a while, however, one shakes off the role models you tried to be like in the past, and develop in your own direction.

In meinen Anfängen gab es einige Fotografen die mich inspirierten. Jean Loup Sieff z.b. auch Newton aber nach einer gewissen Zeit schüttelt man seine Vorbilder die man nach wie vor respektiert ab und entwickelt die eigenen Geschichten.

Do you have a dream for photography that you would like to fulfill?

Hast Du einen fotografischen Traum, welchen Du Dir gern erfüllen würdest?

To take a picture that will end a war … that would be the greatest …
