I discovered Elias’ photos on Flick by chance, and his image style made me curious. When I took a closer look at his portfolio the cameras used drew my attention. These include a Mamiya 645, a Bronica GS-1, an Olympus OM-1, an Autocord Minolta, a Contax T-2, and others. The unusual thing about this is that all these cameras come from the analog age, so the result is quite different than digital. The colors are different; depending on the film used they are more harmonious, even partly softer and with a hint of vintage, a fine grain, and a bit of a blur on the pictures. This is particularly noticeable in the black and white images. While many photographers using digital equipment try to obtain these results through the use of Photoshop filters and trimming their pictures, Elias achieved this effect by the use of the relevant films and the knowledge of how to use his cameras. And this makes all the difference.
In retrospect, one can understand why specific photos can only to be taken with specific cameras and why there are so many enthusiasts of analog technology today.
After 5 years of productive work as a senior designer of a company in Seattle, Elias decided to use his skills to strike out on his own, and today is a self-employed photographer, designer and videographer on the go. His pictures are as varied as the cameras used, sometimes they are snapshots of his travels, then again impressions of cities like New York, with fantastic street photography or various landscapes. Elias manages to capture the moment on film, to record the situation and to impart the mood to us; this is goes into his photos and this makes them something special. It should be mentioned at this point that many photos were taken by his wife, Theresa, who photographed with the same dedication and ambition.
